Improve your Mood with Massage Therapy

January 11th, 2017 • Posted by Mary Nix • Permalink

Most people think of massage as a way to soothe sore muscles or as a tool to melt away stress. But massage has positive effects on more than just soreness or muscle tension. You can actually improve your mood with massage.

Multiple studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami have concluded that massage relieves anxiety and depression by actually affecting the body's biochemistry. The studies looked at the effects of massage on approximately 500 men, women and children suffering from anxiety or depression. Researchers measured levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) in participants immediately before and following a massage session, and found that massage lessened cortisol levels by up to 53%. In addition to lowered cortisol levels, researchers also found increased levels of serotonin and dopamine, (neurotransmitters that are instrumental in relieving depression) in the study's participants.

Angela Olinger, a massage therapist at the renowned Mayo Clinic concurs with the findings, saying that she provides massage therapy for many patients living with the symptoms of depression and anxiety. She reports that most of them report significant relief following a 60-minute massage session, citing a more relaxed state of mind and a renewed sense of self-worth. She likens massage to an "hour-long hug", providing people with nurturing touch and a safe place to rest, both physically and emotionally. She maintains that massage is beneficial not only for those diagnosed with a mental illness such as depression or anxiety, but for anyone who's suffering from an overload of extra stress -- something that affects virtually all of us living and working in today's fast-paced society.
