Who Gets a Massage and Why?

February 8th, 2017 • Posted by Mary Nix • Permalink

Massage therapy has been around for thousands of years, but many Americans are either unaware of how impressive massage is, or else are just not convinced of its benefits for their day-to-day lives. While massage is usually associated with athletes and office workers, anyone can get some benefit out of massage therapy, including recovery after an injury, part of treatment for a chronic illness, or maintenance for anything from mental stress levels to heart conditions.

Athletes are possibly the most common type of person associated with massage aside from the therapists themselves due to massage helping so much with injury and workout recovery time, but studies have shown that massage therapy has a lot of benefits that serve the average person just as well as the professional, including:

  • increasing blood oxygen capacity by 10-15%
  • loosening sore muscles
  • lessening fatigue
  • improving posture
  • improving blood flow to the body, including internal organs
  • shortening recovery time post-surgery or after an injury
  • improving the function of oil and sweat glands in the skin
  • balancing the nervous system
  • and increasing range of motion

Self-care knows no age limits either. Massage can even help lessen some of the effects of the aging process, including thin, dry skin, sleeplessness, loss of elasticity in tissues, and a slower nervous system response. And, while it's certainly not a cure, those with depression, anxiety disorders, and other mental illnesses often find massage improves their mood and allows them to go about their day with an improved mental state.

Massage is for everyone and we would love to use it to help you improve your quality of life. For more information on the benefits of massage therapy, or to set up an appointment with one of our therapists, contact us at Eagle Creek Massage today.
